Here we are, Summer just kicking in and, although the heat hasn’t quite cranked up yet, weather forecasts suggest that it is coming soon. So, if you’re wondering what to get into this weekend, July 11-12, here’s a rundown of the some of the exciting and interesting things going on all around the Chesapeake bay region this weekend.
18th Annual Maryland Swim For Life
Rolph’s Wharf Marina on the Chester River is playing host to this year’s fundraising dip. On Saturday July 11, swimmers who can raise at least $100 in donations can choose from five different courses to try out their swimming styles. Money raised will go to the Chester River Association and various organizations that benefit people and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Check it out here and try some swimming for a good cause.
Potomac Jazz and Seafood Festival
Hot weather, great food and cool tunes mark the day at St. Clement’s Island Museum in Colton’s Point, MD. Saturday, July 11 will showcase a host of smooth jazz acts including Ruby Hayes, who performed at President Obama’s inauguration, Jaared, and Art Sherrod Jr. You can even spend some time enjoying the natural beauty of the island and learning about Maryland’s history. The ticket price includes a boat ride to St. Clement’s Island and all of the walking trails and historical information available, including tours of the Blackistone Lighthouse. Sharkfest!
Who doesn’t like sharks? I know I do. Ever since I saw Jaws when I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by these creatures from a bygone era. On Saturday, July 11, the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, MD is devoting an entire day to in honor of the shark. For the not-so-squeamish, there’s a shark touch tank, check out a 20 million year old shark tooth, have a picture taken within the jaws of a megalodon, try your hand at some shark mural painting and a lot more. Pirate Invasion
This weekend in Havre de Grace, MD, pirates take over the historic town at the head of the Bay. July 11 and 12 will see a pirate encampment at the Susquehanna Museum at the Lockhouse. You can come out and see what life was like as a pirate. There will be a gala pirate feast on Saturdaynight complete with a pirate costume contest.
